runescapemoney04 Jury acquits Wesley Snipes of tax fraud
OCALA, Fla. - Wesley Snipes' attorneys admitted his ideas were crazy — that Americans have no obligation to pay taxes and the IRS cannot legally collect them. ADVERTISEMENT But the star of the "Blade" vampire trilogy was the victim of crooked advisers, promoters of the tax protest movement, they argued, and a jury apparently agreed. Snipes was acquitted Friday of federal tax fraud and conspiracy, but jurors found him guilty on three misdemeanor counts of failing to file a tax return. "There was no intent to defraud anybody — he's not a fraudster, he's not a felon," defense attorney Robert Barnes said. "There's a couple of returns he should have filed. He'll be looking to make amends on anything he needs to make amends on." Snipes faces up to three years in prison, and is still liable for millions in taxes likely to be pursued in civil court. He had faced up to 16 years in prison if convicted on all charges. The actor sat emotionless as the verdict was read, then nodded as his lawyer gave him a congratulatory pat on the leg. Afterward, he refused to talk to reporters who camped outside the courthouse for three days as jurors deliberated. Co-defendants Eddie Ray Kahn, the founder of a known tax protest group, and Douglas P. Rosile, a delicensed accountant, were convicted Friday by the same jury of tax fraud and conspiracy. Both face up to 10 years in prison. The actor, who also appeared in "White Men Can't Jump," is among the most famous targets of an IRS criminal investigation, and his prosecution was key for the government. Snipes paid taxes in the 1990s, but changed his mind after meeting Kahn, prosecutors said. He refused to file tax returns from 1999-2004, during which he signed two contracts for more than $10 million on "Blade" sequels, they said. Snipes used bizarre arguments to justify his position, saying the IRS' own code meant income earned in this country wasn't taxable, and the agency had no legal authority because it's not a proper government entity. Later, the actor threatened the government and individual agents in his pursuit, declaring himself a "nonresident alien" not subject to tax laws. Courts have long rejected such arguments, but there were exceptions. U.S. Attorney Robert O'Neill, who prosecuted the case, speculated that jurors might have bought Snipes' argument that he shouldn't be tried in Florida for certain tax years because he was living elsewhere at the time. It's also possible that jurors determined Snipes did not have to file returns for 2002-2004 because the IRS notified him that he was the target of a criminal investigation and any tax filings could be used against him, O'Neill said. "We thought there was sufficient runescapemoney04 evidence for a conviction on all counts, but obviously the jury disagreed," he said. Kahn founded the central Florida tax protest group American Rights Litigators and its successor, Guiding Light of God Ministries. He has been using tax scams since at least the early 1980s, according to government documents, and refused to defend himself in court against the charges. Rosile, a CPA who lost his licenses in Florida and Ohio, allegedly prepared the fraudulent documents for Snipes, along with numerous other Kahn clients. The IRS bears a unique burden of proof in criminal tax cases. It must show not only that someone broke the law, but he or she did so with willful, bad purpose to defraud the government. A few defendants have won acquittal because the jury thought they sincerely believed they did not have to pay. (More)

runescapemoney04 Court: Spears' dad has temporary control
LOS ANGELES - Throughout the course of Britney Spears' months-long emotional tailspin, one universal question has lingered with each spectacular turn: Why doesn't her family take drastic measures to stop this? On Friday, they did. Spears' father, James Spears, was put in charge of the troubled pop star's welfare during a surprise court appearance by him and mother Lynne Spears, a day after their daughter was whisked to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Just as Spears' immediate family was taking charge of her life, Sam Lutfi, the man seen escorting her about town and sometimes speaking on her behalf, was removed from the picture with a restraining order. A message left on Lutfi's cell phone seeking comment was not immediately returned. James Spears' eyes grew teary when he was named conservator of his daughter. He and an attorney, Andrew Wallet, were runescapemoney04 named conservators of the estate. The parents sat with attorney Blair Berk throughout the hearing, smiling and embracing after the announcement. The events of the past two days were the first positive signs that Spears may have reached a turning point in a downward spiral of bizarre behavior — all of it captured by paparazzi lenses — that has resulted in her losing custody of and visitation rights with her two young sons. Spears was taken early Thursday by paramedics with a heavy police escort to UCLA Medical Center's psychiatric hospital. There was no account or description of the young star's actual condition during the hearing. It was the second hospitalization this year for the 26-year-old singer, who has exhibited odd behavior since November 2006, when she filed for divorce from Kevin Federline, the father of their sons, 1-year-old Jayden James and 2-year-old Sean Preston. A court creates conservatorships when it determines that a person cannot care for themselves or handle their affairs. Commissioner Reva Goetz said Spears would be under conservatorship until Monday, at which time another hearing would be held. "It is in the best interests of the conservatee to have conservatorship over her person," Goetz told a packed courtroom. As conservator, her father will have the power to "restrict visitors," have around-the-clock security for Spears and have access to all medical records, Goetz said. It was unclear whether the court gave her father the power to make medical decisions on Spears' behalf; even if that was granted, the role can be limited. Conservators can consult with doctors on medication options, but the patient can refuse. Only in emergencies can someone be forcefully treated. Otherwise, a court hearing must be scheduled to hammer out the issue. "Being a conservator does not give them the power to force medication," said Nancy Kincaid, a spokeswoman with the California Department of Mental Health. The court also issued a restraining order against Lutfi, Spears' sometime manager and friend, and gave her father permission to change the locks on her estate and remove anyone who is there. Goetz said conservatorship over the estate was "necessary and appropriate." She gave approval for the conservator to "take all actions to secure all liquid assets including credit cards." Dr. Mark Goulston, a Los Angeles psychiatrist who is not involved in the case, said he was not surprised by the ruling, given Spears' increasingly erratic behavior and what appear to have been periodic and unsuccessful efforts at rehabilitation. Although placing people in conservatorships is not unusual, Goulston said, courts usually look long and hard at the evidence before putting a person in one. "You have to really make a case before someone is allowed to become a conservator, so I would conclude her judgment is fairly impaired," he said. The court, which rejected a request to hold the hearing without news media present, did not immediately rule on another request to seal all documents. Goetz said she would rule on Monday, and court spokesman Allan Parachini said the papers would remain sealed until then. The conservatorship was approved by a different court from the one handling a custody dispute over the singer's children with Federline. A hearing on custody issues is set Monday morning in that court. ___ AP Special Correspondent Linda Deutsch and staff writers John Rogers and Alicia Chang contributed to this report. (More)

runescapemoney04 Bob Barker backs LA pet spay law
LOS ANGELES - Urged on by retired "The Price is Right" host Bob Barker and a throng of supporters, the Los Angeles City Council has taken steps to require spaying and neutering of most pet cats and dogs by 4 months of age. So much applause erupted Friday when Barker stood to endorse the idea that council President Eric Garcetti urged just a quick clap because time for public comment was limited. Barker replied: "Councilman Garcetti, that's runescapemoney04 the most beautiful sound I've heard in months since I left 'Price is Right.'" Barker noted that for decades he closed his show by urging viewers to help control the pet population and that the audience was filled with people who had worked on the problem for years. "Now I'd like to think that all of us working together have made a difference," he said. "But it's not enough, and the only answer is legislation. And to be more specific, the only answer is this ordinance." Barker said 4 months is important because animals can breed at very young ages, but he noted that under the law it would only take a letter from a veterinarian to delay surgery to 5 or 6 months of age. Other advocates said the law would have plenty of exceptions, including for licensed breeders and show animals. Minus four members, the council voted 10-1 in favor of the ordinance. A second vote on the measure is required before it can become a city law. (More)

runescapemoney04 Michelle Williams: 'My heart is broken
NEW YORK - Michelle Williams ended her silence Friday, saying her "heart is broken" over the death of "Brokeback Mountain" actor Heath Ledger. The 27-year-old actress and Ledger became a couple during filming of 2005's "Brokeback," in which they costarred as husband and wife. They later moved to New York, and had a daughter, Matilda, born October 2005. ADVERTISEMENT "Please respect our need to grieve privately," Williams said in a statement. "My heart is broken. I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father. All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day." Before they split last year, Ledger and Williams lived together in Brooklyn's quiet, tree-lined Boerum Hill neighborhood. Last week, well-wishers left bouquets of flowers outside the four-story, sage-green brownstone with a black wrought-iron fence. "His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time, and we know that he is with runescapemoney04 us still," Williams said. "She will be brought up in the best memories of him." Ledger, 28, died in his Manhattan apartment Jan. 22. Authorities suspect a possible drug overdose, but the cause of his death is still pending the outcome of toxicology tests. Police said several prescription drugs were found in the Manhattan apartment where the actor's body was found. Williams, who also played Jen Lindley on TV's "Dawson's Creek," was nominated for a supporting-actress Oscar for her "Brokeback" role. When Ledger died, Williams and Matilda were in Trollhattan, Sweden, where she had been shooting scenes for the upcoming film "Mammoth." Though she was soon spotted returning to the Brooklyn home where the couple once lived together, she managed to dodge reporters and steer mostly clear of camera crews, and chose to stay silent until Friday's statement. runescapemoney04 French president marries former model
PARIS (AP) — French President Nicolas Sarkozy married former model Carla Bruni on Saturday at the Elysee Palace, according to the official who performed the ceremony. "The bride wore white; she was ravishing, as usual," Francois Lebel, mayor of Paris' eighth arrondissement, or neighborhood, told Europe-1 radio. "The groom wasn't bad either." It was a historic occasion, "the first time in the history of the Republic that a president has gotten married in office," as Lebel said. Sarkozy, 53, and Bruni, 40, were married in the presence of about 20 close family and friends, Lebel said. He runescapemoney04 called the ceremony "a moment of family intimacy for the young newlyweds, of great simplicity and apparently a lot of affection between the spouses. "I wished them a lot of happiness," he said. Under French law, couples must tie the knot before a mayor to make their union official. Sarkozy's openness about his private life has surprised many French, accustomed to presidents who keep their love lives under wraps. At a news conference in January, Sarkozy revealed that the relationship was "serious" and hinted that wedding plans were in the works. But he refused to reveal the date for a wedding, saying only that France might learn about the nuptials once they had already taken place. The couple went public with their relationship during a visit to Disneyland Paris, and they carried out their brief but highly publicized courtship in such places as the ruins of Petra, Jordan. The tabloids even showed the couple at an Egyptian beach resort, Bruni in a tiny black bikini, Sarkozy in trunks, gold chain and Ray-Ban sunglasses. Sarkozy's approval ratings dropped during their courtship — in part, analysts say, because many older, more traditional voters were put off by his glitzy, jet-setting style. During their romance, Sarkozy was nicknamed the "bling-bling president" by the media. He reportedly gave Bruni a pink heart-shaped diamond Dior engagement ring, while she gave him a Swiss-made Patek Philippe watch. The wedding was the third for Sarkozy, who has three children. It was the first for Bruni, an Italian-born heiress who had a major modeling career and a well-publicized lovelife. Bruni, now a singer, dated rockers Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, tycoon Donald Trump and actor Vincent Perez. She has a young son, Aurelien, from a relationship with philosophy professor Raphael Enthoven. (More)

runescapemoney04 Celebrities in New Orleans for Carnival
NEW ORLEANS - Sandy "Pepa" Denton got a lesson this week on how to toss beads and an up-close look at the elaborate float she'll be riding on in Monday's Krewe of Orpheus parade with friend and rap partner Cheryl "Salt" James. The women, stars of the 1980s rap group Salt-N-Pepa, brought their VH1 reality TV show to New Orleans this week to document their work helping a family rebuild after Hurricane Katrina, as well as their ride in the parade. "It's so pretty," Denton said of the float, which has two winged horses and hundreds of decorative flowers. It will be among dozens rolling down St. Charles Avenue the night before Mardi Gras. James, however, hasn't runescapemoney04 seen the float yet and has never been to Carnival. She's a bit nervous. "This is all new to me," she said. For parade goers, celebrity watching will be as fun as grabbing the throws tossed from the floats as Carnival goes into high gear this weekend with Fat Tuesday just days away. Likely absent, though, will be superstar Britney Spears. The native of Kentwood, northwest of New Orleans, was hospitalized Thursday in Los Angeles after a series of continuing crises. But the headliners should not disappoint. They include actor/director Kevin Costner as grand marshal of the Krewe of Endymion, one of the largest and glitziest parades. He'll be joined by the Doobie Brothers and Belinda Carlisle, former lead singer of the Go-Gos. On Sunday, wrestler and reality TV star Hulk Hogan will reign as king of the Krewe of Bacchus. NBC's "Today" morning talk show correspondent Hoda Kotb and weatherman Al Roker will be grand marshals of the Krewe of Argus on Fat Tuesday in suburban Metairie. Also on Mardi Gras (which means Fat Tuesday), clarinetist Pete Fountain will lead a cadre of locals and celebrities for the annual trek of the Half-Fast Marching Club. Orpheus, the glittery parade founded in 1993 by singer Harry Connick Jr., has one of the longest list of celebs. Besides Salt-N-Pepa, Lance Bass and Kevin Meaney — stars of the Broadway musical "Hairspray" — daytime television star Christian LeBlanc and two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves will ride. Castroneves, who with dancing partner Julianne Hough won last year's "Dancing with the Stars" competition on ABC, will be one of a batch of reality TV stars at Carnival. Among them Monday night will be Bridget Marquardt, Holly Madison and Kendra Wilkinson, stars of E! cable network's Playboy-based reality show "The Girls Next Door." They'll be throwing a fundraiser on Lundi Gras, or Mardi Gras eve, for actor Brad Pitt's Make It Right Foundation at the House of Blues in the French Quarter. Pitt's charity is rebuilding homes in the Lower 9th Ward destroyed by Katrina in 2005. South Louisiana's Carnival celebration dates back to 1699, when French explorers sloshing through the wetlands paused to mark the day before Lent. But celebrities didn't become a regular highlight until the first Bacchus parade in 1969, when dancer/actor Danny Kaye reigned. Since then, dozens have gotten into the spirit. "Sopranos" star James Gandolfini, for example, was last year's king of Bacchus and followed in the footsteps of such big names as Bob Hope and Ron Howard. John Goodman, Chuck Norris, Jason Alexander, Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd have served as past grand marshals for Endymion, and Glenn Close, Sandra Bullock, Forest Whitaker and Whoopi Goldberg are among those who've ridden in Orpheus. Ardley Hanemann, an Orpheus spokesman, said a variety of factors made coordinating celebrities' schedules difficult this year. Among them: the Hollywood writers' strike and an earlier-than-usual Mardi Gras that competes with Super Bowl festivities. Still, parade organizers say they are happy with their catch, and the riders are excited as well. Endymion captain Ed Muniz said Costner has called him a number of times, not only excited about riding in the parade, but about also about dining at Emeril Lagasse's Delmonico restaurant and gulping sugar-coated beignets at Cafe du Monde. "He's got an affection for New Orleans," Muniz said. "He's filmed movies here. He loves it here, and he's really excited about being a part of Mardi Gras." Muniz said celebrity participation in Carnival has had a positive ripple effect. "It gets the (krewe) members excited, it gets parade-goers excited. It's good for the organization, it's good for Mardi Gras, and it's good for the city and tourism," he said. Salt-N-Pepa said they chose to come to New Orleans not only to take part in Mardi Gras but to keep the plight of the recovering city and its people fresh in the minds of Americans. The first season of "The Salt-N-Pepa Show" ended in December. A second series of shows is scheduled to begin airing Feb. 11. The New Orleans video won't be shown until late March and early April. It will include Salt-N-Pepa's work with St. Bernard Project, an organization that has helped more than 70 families move to St. Bernard Parish since the storm by raising money for building materials and recruiting volunteers. "The main point for coming is to bring attention through the show to the fact that there's still a lot of devastation," James said. (More)

runescapemoney04 Sights and sounds of Carnival in La
Special touches of Carnival 2008 around Louisiana. OFF AND RUNNING ON THE BAYOU Mamou's famous Courir de Mardi Gras, or Run of Mardi Gras, dates back to before the Civil War. The event begins the Sunday before Fat Tuesday with the early morning courir, in which a group of costumed community members ride through town on horseback in search of ingredients to bring together for a community gumbo. The gumbo is usually cooked on Lundi Gras — the day before Mardi Gras — in downtown Mamou, where there is a big street dance. The all-male Mamou courir remains faithful to old traditions, so there are no decorative floats and riders do not throw trinkets to onlookers. Accompanied by a flatbed runescapemoney04 trailer carrying musicians and by other trailers transporting participants who do not have horses, the riders stop at homes in rural Evangeline Parish where they sing and dance while begging for chickens and other makings for a gumbo. Mamou is in Evangeline Parish, northwest of Lafayette. THE CHIPS ARE BACK IN MID-CITY KREWE When the Krewe of Mid-City rparades down St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans on Sunday, costumed riders will be throwing bags of Zapp's potato chips for the first time since before Hurricane Katrina. Potato chips made their first appearance as a Carnival throw in 1991, when Mid-City introduced Zapp's in 1-ounce packages stamped with the krewe's name. The krewe didn't throw chips for two years after the storm struck on Aug. 29, 2005. This year, the bags of chips are back, and will sport a special design to mark the krewe's 75th anniversary. Zapp's is based in Gramercy. The Krewe of Mid-City was formed in 1933 by business owners and still bears the name of the neighborhood where it paraded for decades, starting in 1934. That year, Mid-City paraded with a half dozen floats drawn by mules, a couple of bands and horseback riders. BACCHUS TIPS ITS HAT TO CHAMPION TIGERS Head coach Les Miles, senior members of Louisiana State University's national championship football team and LSU cheerleaders will ride a special float Sunday in New Orleans' Krewe of Bacchus parade. Brennan said they'll be tossing special LSU throws. "Bacchus is thrilled to honor our national championship team," Brennan said. "They have lifted our great state to special national prominence by their successes on the football field, and I know the immense crowd that will watch the 2008 Bacchus parade will honor the team with their applause and cherish catching the special LSU throws." The O. Perry Walker High School band will be marching behind the LSU float and will play the LSU fight song. Wrestler and reality television star Hulk Hogan will reign as the parade's celebrity king. Associated Press writers Mary Foster and Stacey Plaisance contributed. (More)

runescapemoney04 African ritual grows in Brazil carnival
NAZARE DA MATA, Brazil - As morning breaks over the rolling green cane fields, the 19-year-old sugar cane cutter takes an herbal bath and offers a prayer to indigenous and African spirits before transforming himself into something resembling an electric, Day-Glo lion from outer space. Josenildo Estevao da Silva dons colorful pantaloons, hoists a rack of cow bells onto his back and tops off the outfit with a brilliantly sequined poncho and a screaming headdress of neon ribbons. Then he marches several miles down dirt roads to rehearse with hundreds of other lance-wielding revelers who will converge on the state capital of Recife Sunday. "When I'm all dressed up I become a warrior. It's a very powerful feeling," says Silva, a member of Cambinda Brasileira, a group of Maracatu revelers founded in 1898. The most visible manifestation runescapemoney04 of carnival occurs more than 1,000 miles to the south in Rio de Janeiro, where nationally televised samba parades have fans rooting for their favorite groups with a passion usually reserved for soccer teams. But nearly every region of Brazil has its own carnival traditions. In recent years, a growing number of revelers turned off by the commercialism of Rio's grand spectacle have begun looking elsewhere, to states such as Bahia and Pernambuco, where more homegrown rhythms dominate the celebrations. Perhaps none of these traditions has benefited as much from renewed attention as maracatu, a deeply secret, semi-religious ritual born among former slaves in the sugarcane fields of Pernambuco state, with roots stretching back to African and indigenous cultures. "We have the most democratic carnival in Brazil. It's open to everyone and it's free. You don't have to sit in a stadium like in Rio or pay to party in a cordoned-off area like in Bahia," says Recife Mayor Joao Paulo Lima Silva, who for eight years has dressed up as a maracatu lance-bearer to kick off the party. Anthropologists say the origins of the ritual are mysterious, a mixture of several traditions with the dancers fancying themselves warrior members of an Indian tribe for reasons that are not entirely clear. The music of maracatu consists of improvised verses sung a capella and answered by the thundering of trumpets, trombones and host of percussion instruments — a very different sound from the drums of Rio's samba schools. Maracatu was disappearing in the 1980s, and in 1989 only 11 groups remained in Pernambuco state. But then an association was formed to promote the tradition, and authorities cracked down on violence by maracatu groups who would often attack their rivals to steal their costumes. The number of groups grew to 112 as they admitted women and children. Women cannot perform as lance-bearers, but take on roles that had previously been performed by men in drag. Maracatu also received a boost from popular musicians Chico Science and Nacao Zumbi, who dressed as maracatu lance-bearers in their video for "Maracatu Atomico," a huge hit on MTV Brazil. Science died in a car crash in 1997, after working to restore Brazilian music's reliance on traditional rhythms rather than American pop. The success of that movement sent hordes of middle-class Pernambuco residents into rural areas and slums to study at the feet of long-forgotten masters, breathing new life into maracatu and other traditions. But some say the growing popularity of maracatu is watering down the tradition. "Some groups today have lost their religious link and a lot of the younger people no longer respect the rules. They are interested in the look (of the costumes) but have no interest in sustaining the meaning of the ritual," said Sumaia Viera, a researcher of traditional cultures at the Federal University of Pernambuco. The groups themselves are secretive about their spiritual preparations, which include abstaining from sex for two weeks and imbibing special potions, including one made of sugarcane brandy and gun powder. But many maracatu supporters welcome the newcomers. "If you're going to be picky about who is going to dance, you're not going to have too many people dancing," says Manoelzinho Salustiano, vice president of the Association of Maracatus Baque Solto of Pernambuco. He says old-timers teach the new arrivals about the rituals, and "the more they learn about it the more interested they get." (More)

runescapemoney04 Beijing's new Watercube called awesome
BEIJING - Pick your own description. One U.S. swim official called the "Watercube" simply "awesome." A high-ranking International Olympic Committee official visiting Beijing's newly opened swimming venue Thursday — the dramatic $200 million structure with the honeycomb-like facade — called it "out of this world." Otylia Jedrzejczak, the only gold medalist from the Athens Games competing in the low-key China Open — the inaugural event at the venue — had a slightly different take. "I think it's too hot in the pool, and too hot in the changing room," Jedrzejczak said. "The rest is OK." Only a few thousand fans runescapemoney04 turned up at the 17,000-seat venue to watch the first official strokes in the facility. What they saw were a few evening heats, which were to be followed by morning finals on Friday. That follows the same schedule as the Olympics, which has moved the swim finals to the morning to suit North American TV viewers a half-world away. The first in the pool for an official race was Mongolia's Tsogjargal Narantsog, who was the only swimmer in his 100-meter butterfly heat. Swimming alone, he finished in 1 minute, 6.79 seconds — that's about 16 seconds off the world record of American Ian Crocker — and got loud applause. "The pool's out of the world," high-ranking IOC member Kevan Gosper said. "You'd think it was sent in from another planet. "I thing it will be awe-inspiring for the athletes and overwhelming for the new Olympians," Gosper added. "Almost every aspect makes it the finest aquatic center I've seen for an Olympic Games — by far." Most of the world's top teams — including the Americans and Australians — have skipped the meet. One of only two officials on hand for USA Swimming was Jonty Skinner, the director of sports science. He came to learn the layout: the route to doping control, the distance to the warm-down pool, and any quirks. "The pool itself is awesome," Skinner said. "I think the kids are going to come in here and just go wild. When kids goes wild, it just adds to the ambiance of the whole thing. It's the grandeur, the size that's exciting." Skinner spotted one potential problem. Like the entire building, the high ceiling is made of a membrane-like cell structure — picture the pattern of bubble wrap. The design may make it difficult for backstrokers, who often use the ceiling for orienting themselves down the lanes. "It's almost like the sky to a backstroker," Skinner said. "They may not know where they are going." Skinner said the starting blocks were much deeper — about 30 inches — than the smaller blocks used in Athens. These offer taller swimmers space to step back. He said the Americans skipped the meet because of the travel, conflicts with the U.S. college season and the world short-course championships later this year in England. "The timing wasn't great for us," he said. This should not bother Michael Phelps, who won six gold medals in Athens and will be trying to match or break Mark Spitz's record of seven golds. "To that guy, water is water," Skinner said. "Starting blocks, lane lines — he's in another world." Skinner said the Americans will train in Singapore before arriving in Beijing. Like many teams, they are coming at the last minute to avoid Beijing's noxious air. Thursday was one of the best days of the year in Beijing — crisp, cold air and few clouds. But Skinner was not impressed. "Hopefully it gets better because it's still bad," he said. "I can feel it in my throat. We've got plans to deal with it." He said even indoor sports like swimming could be harmed. "You still have to leave the venue and operate outside," he said. There were suggestions earlier in the week at the first unveiling of the building that bright sunlight in the morning streaming through the transparent ceiling could cause problems for television, which prefers consistent lighting. A superficial crack in the concrete around the diving platform was also pointed out, as were many translucent panels dirtied by the Beijing air. The water, however, seems near perfect. "It's looks great and the clarity is awesome," Skinner said. (More)
